New Year’s Resolutions Check-In

New Year’s Resolutions are great! But they do have a tendency to get forgotten. If I’m being totally honest, I’d kind of forgotten what mine were, considering everything that’s been going on at the moment. But we’re just over halfway through the year (even if it feels like it’s been about eight years since January). So, I thought it might be fun to check in on whether I’ve been sticking to my writerly resolutions!

Writing

I did finish a draft of my story! I don’t know if it was still Spring when I did, because I don’t know what time is anymore. But I finished a draft, and started outlining a new story. I was planning on writing some short stories, but I got mobbed by new novel ideas, so my adventures in short stories have been postponed yet again.

Reading

I’ve read 38 books this year, I think. I’m not always great at keeping my Goodreads up to date, but that seems about right! From a quick count, it looks like about 14 of those are contemporary YA, although I should definitely work on reading more recent releases in that category. Still, pretty pleased with the progress there so far!

Blogging and Social Media

Still working on increasing the views to my blog, and on being more consistent with my social media. I just go through phases of being really on top of Twitter and Instagram, and then I fall off! But I’ll keep working on it, and trying to find a sustainable middle ground. I love the online writing community, even as a lurker, so I just need to work out how to participate better.

New Year’s Resolutions

According to Forbes, only 8% of people who set New Year’s resolutions actually accomplish them. That sounds a little depressing. We’ve all had that experience, right? Of setting ourselves up with a resolution and then just abandoning it within days.

I think setting your resolutions up as goals helps, but you can still find when you get started that they’re not going to work. I suspect the coronavirus situation has done a number on a bunch of New Year’s resolutions this year! All of which is to say, I don’t think it pays to stress too much about your resolutions.

I’m pleased with the progress I’m making around the goals I set this January! But I know these are going to be goals I’ll be working on in one form or another for a while. Also, they’re pretty easy to work on, realistically!

Did you set any goals or resolutions in January? Have you been able to keep working on them, or have they fallen by the wayside this year?

I never set resolutions as such but I do set myself a few goals for the year. I put them on page one of my planner but don’t tend to check in until I’m writing the new ones for the following year. I haven’t really thought about mine much this year with everything going on in the world. But I’m on book 45 and my Goodreads target was only 60 so I’m pretty sure that goal is going to be smashed x
