Thinking Moon’s Questions…
- If you won a Grammy for any genre of music, what would it be?
I mean, I don’t really know what my genre of music would be! Alternative, maybe? Or pop? Maybe I’d have to go all out on the music video and win an award for that?! I think you’ll have to have a listen and judge for yourself!
- Who is your favourite villain(s) from any universe?
Oh, this has to be Kilgrave from the first season of Jessica Jones on Netflix. Partly because I’m just a tiny bit in love with David Tennant, but mostly because I think he was such an interesting and layered villain. Awful and selfish and, by many definitions, evil – but you could kind of see how a kid growing up with those powers would really struggle to grow up without becoming pretty twisted. It was complicated! And I like my villains a little bit complicated.
- What was your all-time favourite Halloween costume or cosplay you’ve done? Pictures, please!
I’m sorry to say I actually don’t tend to go that hard on Halloween! I’ve done some dressing up for nights out or hockey events at uni, but a lot of the time I’m pretty lazy – wearing all black, throwing on a cat mask and calling it a day. Sorry!! I did hand-sew a Chihiro costume (from Spirited Away), which I was very proud of, but now can’t find any photographs of. This is what it was based on! My other best attempt at anything like cosplay I’ll cover in a moment.
- What’s the weirdest trend you’ve ever actually partaken in?
Probably the technically weirdest thing I’ve participated in was the Bothwell LARP I took part in last summer. Held at Herstmonceaux castle, East Sussex, you get to spend a weekend in a totally different world; attending magic school, making friends inside and outside the house you’re sorted into, meeting mythical creatures and solving mysteries. It was amazing, and I’ll definitely go back one day (when I can afford it!!). I thought I’d be more self conscious there than I was, but when people allow themselves to be transported together there’s something uniquely wonderful about it, and I frequently found myself completely imersed in my character’s storylines, and the storylines unfolding around her.
- What Movie / Play / Game soundtrack is your favourite?
I adore the soundtrack for Zelda: Breath of the Wild (minimalist, but still beautiful and highly atmospheric), also the soundtrack for Spirited Away. My brother and I watched that movie so many times when we were little, so it’s got a lot of very positive memories attached to it!
- What was the best thing, before sliced bread?!
According to a single and possibly reliable source, sliced bread was introduced to the UK in 1937. So, I’m going to tentatively propose that the best thing before sliced bread was Jane Austen. What? I love Pride and Prejudice!
- What is your favourite inspirational quote?
“Love is keeping the promise anyway.” – John Green, in The Fault in Our Stars
I’m not sure where I fall on the romantic/cynic spectrum, I think I very a lot from moment to moment, but I think there’s something in this line that encapsulates both of those perspectives. Love is deliberate, it’s not something that happens by accident, and sometimes you’re not going to feel like loving the people closest to you! But when you agree to build your life around somebody else’s, and help them to build their life around you, you’re making a promise, or even a collecion of promises – to treat them kindly, to be reliable, not to change your mind easily. And so even when it’s not easy, even when you don’t totally feel like it, maybe love boils down to keeping that promise. To keep trying, and to keep loving.
